UPDATE #2 by Loosecannon : book review "Pinnacle Studio 14 revealed by Jeff Naylor"
It isn’t very often that the novice or experienced Studio video editor has access to a comprehensive source of information about a Studio product. Jeff Naylor has done an excellent job of providing just such a resource with his recently published book about Studio 14. Jeff has many years of experience in video editing and he uses all of his experience and talent to the best advantage in this soft cover book.
The book is over 270 pages long and is broken down into 12 chapters plus sections on FAQ’s and an Index. They cover everything from your very first project right through to advanced topics such as keyframes, witness protection, and the Motion Titler. The chapters are generously illustrated. There’s an illustration on almost every page and sometimes more than one on a page. I don’t know about you, but I always like to see a picture of what’s going on.
At the end of each chapter Jeff does a summary of what you should have learned. That not only summarizes things pretty well but it can also serve as a quick guide if you’re trying to look up a particular topic after you’ve read the book.
Not only do you get the book but there’s also a dvd included with an assortment of project files in various formats such as mpg and mp4. There’s also some jpg files and titles. All of which can be used as you read through the book.
It is obvious Jeff spent a lot of time to design the layout and the workflow presented in the book and I’m sure he spent just as much time checking his facts.
To summarize, I think this is an excellent book for the novice who is new to video editing and wants to do more than just simple cut, copy, and paste type edits. It will put you on the path to quicker learning and better editing skills. The more experienced editors may think they don’t need yet another book or tutorial. But the fact is we all tend to get set in the way we do things and it doesn’t hurt to review the things you may have forgotten about over the last few years.
