From one menu to another menu in a video-film

This tutorial created for Pinnacle Studio can also be done with Avid Studio with a few adjustments. These adjustments are shown in bold italics: "If you use Avid Studio {...}"

When you like to have a menu point to another menu, do as follows:

  1. Open STUDIO, add a menu and place a few clips on the time-line (see picture)

  1. Add a menu to Movie (in the middle for example) and choose: No, I will create chapters manually
  2. Double-click on menu M1
  3. Click in the yellow part of menu 2 with the right hand side mousebutton and choose Set Disk Chapter
  4. Add a name for menu 2
  5. Double-click on M2
  6. Click with the right hand side mouse button in the pink part of Menu 1 and choose Set Disk Chapter
  7. Add a name for menu 1

Now you can go from menu 1 to menu 2 and vice versa. In this way you can have various menu’s pointing to each other.
Bonus: the chapter C1 (and back to menu M1) can be dragged with the mouse to the place where you want them. Success !

If you use Avid Studio:

Before you jump headlong into this part of the tutorial, I advise you to view or to view again two great video tutorials, offered by Avid Technology, Inc.:

 The big difference with Pinnacle Studio is that you can not drag your DVD title on to the "Movie" timeline tab but instead an area is reserved for that purpose under the "Disc" tab.

There are two ways to do this :

  • either you start your movie in the "Movie" tab and export it in the "Disc" tab;
  • or you create your movie directly in the "Disc" tab.

I'll let you see the Avid documentation for more details.

For this tutorial I chose the first method to be as complete as possible. So here, step by step, you will see how to proceed:

Preparation of the project on the timeline
  1. With the "Movie" tab open, prepare your timeline. For this tutorial, I put together on the timeline ...
  2. "OurFunVacation" cut into scenes;
  3. "OurNatureAdventure" not cut into scenes.

If you do not have the demo video distributed with a different Studio version , you can download it (courtesy of AVID) in the "Associated Links" section of this page below (right click / Save Target As)..

The DVD menus choice in the library
  1. With the "Library" tab selected, view the "Disc Menus";
  2. Select "Standard Menus";
  3. We will use the first 4 menus (main 50sModern 16x9, 50sModern sub 16x9, Circles main 16x9 and Circles sub16x9 ).
Opening a new project "Disc"
  1. With the "Disc" tab selected, open a new recording project;
  2. From the "File" menu;
  3. Select the "New" submenu;
  4. And click on "Disc".
Convert the film project to disc project
And you will discover a small bug in the French version ...
A dialog box displays the title "Convert the proposed film project record" and ask the question: "Do you want to cancel your work in the background?".
  1. Once you know that the translator wanted to ask you if you want to create a disc project from the video just opened, you will answer without hesitation "Yes" and Avid Studio opens a copy of the film in the disk creation window.
The main areas of the tab "DVD Menu"

On this screenshot you will notice two important areas:

  1. The "List Menu" where you can drag the menu you want to use;
  2. The viewing area of the timeline of your film project.
Setting up the menus in "Menu List"
  1. Click and drag the 50sModern main 16x9 menu to the "Menu List";
  2. Click and drag the 50sModern sub16x9 menu to the "Menu List";
  3. Notice that each menu is a different color and when you drag the blue menu in the "Menu List" link C1 Blue (Play Movie) has been created automatically at the beginning of the movie and a M1 Blue link (Back menu 1) was created automatically at the end of film (not shown in the screenshot).
  4. Also note the red icon on the menu that tells you that this menu 2 can not be reached because it has no links to it.

Also drag the Circles main 16x9 menu and the multi-page sub menu Circles sub 16x9 to the "Menu List" as you did previously for 50sModern menus.
You can see that:
  1. Menu 2 still can not be reached because it has no link;
  2. Menu 3 still can not be reached because it has no link;
  3. Menu 4 still can not be reached because it has no link;

The means available in the Menu Editor to make this "DVD Menu" are many and you have at your disposal several ergonomic methods: choose the one that best suits the way you work.
The toolbar of the timeline offers many creative tools: icons to create and delete chapters, to create and delete returns, to create and delete links ...
A chapters wizard is present for those who prefer to be guided without asking any questions. This wizard offers several methods of sequencing: by time, by using markers on the project or only the selected part ... It's a big help in the creation of chapters, and the way to link the buttons to chapters and other menus varies widely.
I won't deny that the method I prefer is to drag and drop with the mouse because I don't like Studio to control the operation. I find it more intuitive and I find it at least as fast (except in the case of creating many multi-page menus). It is this method that I will describe. So let's continue.

The menu 1 in display window
Select Menu 1 and in the preview window you will see the left side of the screenshot above. You will see that the first button is already linked to the start of the movie (C1 blue Indicator);
  1. Drag the red question mark to Menu 2 located in the "Menu List". The red question mark is replaced by the M2 link in yellow (Menu 2). You can already see that Menu 2 no longer has the red broken link icon since it now has a link and can be reached;
  2. Using the "Edit" button, you will be able to change the text of your buttons to fit the context;
  3. So you can understand the process better, I changed the labels of the buttons:
    • I called the first button "Read FunVacation NatureAdventure in full" instead of "Play Movie" (default);
    • I called the second button "Read FunVacation by scenes or read NatureAdventure" instead of "Scene Selection" (default).
Achievement of links by drag / drop using the mouse

You will now link the buttons to chapters in OurFunVaction clip. The images used for the button thumbnail is the first frame of the chapter entry point.

  1. Drag the red question mark to the area reserved for markers, to the beginning of the first chapter of OurFunVacation. The chapter marker is created automatically, C1 yellow, and the red question mark is replaced by C1 yellow;
  2. Drag the red question mark to the area reserved for markers, to the beginning of the second chapter of OurFunVacation. The chapter marker is created automatically, C2 yellow, and the red question mark is replaced by a brand new C2 yellow;
  3. Drag the red question mark in the area reserved for markers, the beginning of the third chapter of OurFunVacation. The chapter marker is created automatically, C3 yellow, and the red question mark is replaced by a brand new C3 yellow;
  4. The fourth button is going to be used to link to menu 3. Drag the last red question mark on to Menu 3. When that's done, the last thumbnail image will display the Menu 3. The red question mark will be replaced by the M3 link (Menu 3). You can already see that Menu 3 no longer has the red icon since it has now a link and can be reached.
Edit Menu 2 (multi pages)
Select Menu 2 (multi pages) and proceed with the editing of this menu to change the title and possibly the button text. If you want to keep the chapter numbers, don't touch the pound sign (#) and it will be replaced automatically by the chapter number. After the number sign only add a space and your button caption. After my modification, the display will look like this:
  1. Chapter 1 FunVacation;
    Chapter 2 FunVacation;
    Chapter 3 FunVacation;
  2. Read Nature Adventure.
If you only want to change the button captions, you can do it directly from the button "Chapter #" button in the timeline toolbar. Many other tools for creating and deleting also appear in the timeline toolbar.
Create menu 3 links
We are now coming to the end of the creation of the nested menu. Select Menu 3.
  1. Link the first button at the start of the second clip (OurNatureAdventure) by dragging the red question mark to the area for the markers (C1 green and M3 green are created);
  2. Drag the last red question mark on to Menu 4 (M4 is created).
I will let you connect the 4 menu buttons to the 4 chapters of OurNatureAdventure. You can choose any chapter marker you wish by clicking on Menu 4 and dragging each of the four question marks to the red area for markers for each chapter of OurNatureAdventure. Chapter markers C1 to C4 in a rose color are created automatically and the question marks are replaced by a red mark C1 to C4 that is rose colored.
Use the simulator to test your disc menu
All that's left is for you to test your nested menu.
  1. Open the disc simulator. You will find a set of commands similar to those found on a DVD remote control.
  2. Use the DVD navigation in the bottom right to navigate the buttons and click the center button to launch the corresponding part of the film.
It is strongly recommended that you fully test the interaction of the menu and playback controls before burning your project to disc ... especially if you use a non-rewritable media ...

Ah ... I forgot to mention that if you want to experiment with some added features like motion thumbnails, export a DL dvd, or add a lot of "return to menu's", you may crash the software, and most likely discover some bugs.

Finally, if you want to add a musical introduction and/or compliment your menu with some background music, you must wait for another tutorial.
